Tchoukball Coach Training Seminar

The Kenya Tchoukball Federation experienced yet another amazing moment during the three days Tchoukball Coach Training Seminar which took place from the 7th to 10th of October 2015. The training seminar was spearheaded by Chris Huang, the Fitb President, Coach Fang in charge of the Taiwan National Tchoukball team, Eric Lu, the Fitb Secretary and Kennedy Miruka, the president of the Kenya Tchukball Federation.

The seminar commenced on Wednesday, 7,  2015 with a morning visit to the Ministry of Sports and Youth affairs. This visit was fruitful because the government was pleased to meet our three guests mentioned above and some representatives of different countries. They expressed their gratitude to them for promoting Tchoukball in Kenya. The government further pledged to support Tchoukball related activities in Kenya and ensure that this sport is introduced and promoted in various parts of Kenya.

In the afternoon, the delegation from Taiwan proceeded to Rowaland Scouts camp where they met other Tchoukball lovers from different countries who had come for the seminar. The participants were from Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Some participants from other countries such as Zimbabwe could not make it due to a few unavoidable circumstances but promised to be there for the next event.
The seminar was fun and Chris Huang gave us an introduction to Tchoukball and helped us understand the basics of the game since some participants were not familiar with most aspects of the sport. Chris showed us videos of various Tchoukball tournaments in different countries and we loved it.

It was then time to apply what we had learnt and therefore, we happily moved to the field. We had an amazing time playing and incorporated what we had learnt.

We even got other people at the site interested in the game.

On Thursday, 8, 2015, we had more time for practice as we spent almost the entire day in the field with a few breaks here and there. This time, we decided to do it at Starehe Boys’ Center and School. We got to experience the amazing skills that Coach Fang has and understood why Taiwan team always take the lead in every Tchoukball tournament they participate in. The Starehe students were also glad to watch and participate in playing Tchoukball since they even have a Tchoukball team.

On Friday, 9, 2015, we continued with our training and learnt all that we could with regards to how to teach Tchoukball. We got all the tips we could and couldn’t wait to apply them.
Kenya was then granted the opportunity to host the African Tchoukball Championship in 2016 and Ken Miruka, the President of Kenya Tchoukball Federation signed a contract with Chris Huang, the President of Fitb to formalize this deal.

Saturday, 10, 2015 was the last day of our seminar and most participants didn’t want it to come to an end. However, we had to and we did it in style. We spent the better part of the day in the field learning and playing Tchoukball and getting our questions answered by both Chris Huang and Coach Fang.

In the evening, we proceeded to Rowallan camp where we had our camp fire. We roasted lots of meat which the participants greatly enjoyed as we exchanged stories and talked about our different cultures and experiences. The Meat roasting event ended at 1:00 and we proceeded to our areas of accommodation to get some rest.

We managed to incorporate lots of fun into the coaching seminar. We engaged in different activities and showed our visitors the beauty of Kenya and they loved it.

We made them try out various Kenyan delicacies which they found amazing.

The group celebrated the birthday of one of the participants from Rwanda and it was amazing.

Ken Miruka, the president of  Kenya Tchoukball Federation took the team from Taiwan (Chris Huang, Coach Fang and Eric Lu) on a tour of the Nairobi National Park and they were both amazed and pleased with the scenery and the wildlife.

All the participants from different countries bid each other goodbye on Sunday, 11, 2015 and most people were almost in tears. It was a wonderful experience. The Coaching Seminar and the interaction among people of different backgrounds was quite informative and exciting.
We would like to thank the government of Kenya for the support they have provided to help promote Tchoukball in Kenya. Our deepest gratitude goes to the Chris Huang, Coach Fang and Eric for taking time off their busy schedule to come for the Coaching seminar.
In addition to that, we are grateful for the Tchoukball equipment they provided us with because they will go a long way towards promoting Tchoukball in Kenya.

Special thanks go to the Starehe Boys’ Center and School for allowing us to host the event at their premises and for all the support they have shown towards promoting Tchoukball in Kenya.  We thank all the participants from the East African countries who participated in the Coaching Seminar. It wouldn’t have been the same without you. We are still looking forward to organizing more Tchoukball events and strengthening the bond between the different communities and countries both in Kenya and Africa in general.
